Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)

The Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) will be selected based on qualifications in the subject matter and teaching experience. GTAs generally assist 1-2 instructors per semester and are considered full-time if employed 20 hours per week. The positions typically consist of a stipend and a reduction in tuition. Doctoral and Master’s students may apply for GTA positions with preference given to doctoral students.

How to Apply

The Department of Cyber Security of Engineering is accepting applications for the Fall 2025 semester through Handshake. The department will not respond to emails related to GTA positions because of the large volume of requests we receive each semester. Applications and supporting documentation will only be reviewed in Handshake by the hiring committee.

Assistantship Qualifications

· Applicants must have completed at least one semester at Mason and currently have a minimum GPA of 3.25

· Must be admitted to a master’s or doctoral degree program

· Must be full-time students

Compensation

· Graduate Teaching Assistants receive a fixed stipend, which will be listed in your contract if you are offered a position. They typically assist 1-2 instructors per semester, but assignments can vary.

· GTAs qualify for tuition support of up to 6 credit hours at the in-state rate per semester. (Ph.D. students with a full-time GTA position are assessed tuition at the in-state rate regardless of domicile. MS students with an out-of-state domicile will be responsible for paying for the difference in the tuition rates.) · Ph.D. students are eligible for Subsidized Graduate Student Health Insurance. Insurance is only available to students who start appointments in the Fall unless they are a new admit in the Spring semester.

International Students

International students required to take an English proficiency exam for admission to GMU must take an English language proficiency assessment administered by INTO Mason's Learning Resource Center (LRC) before assuming instructional responsibilities. The CELTD assessment requires students to provide a 10 to 15-minute lecture and respond to questions regarding a topic of their choice related to their proposed GTA assignment. Students should take this test as soon as possible after receiving an offer and at least 6-8 weeks before the start of the semester. Once students pass the exam, they do not have to repeat it if hired for subsequent GTA positions.

Terms and Conditions

Students must give explicit permission for the university to use student records (transcripts) for employment purposes. Students should complete the Transcript Release Form granting the Office of the University Registrar the right to provide CYSE (at no charge to the student) either their official Mason transcript or a copy of the official transcript of their highest degree earned which was submitted during the graduate application process, whichever appropriate to indicate academic qualification.

Renewals are not automatic. Graduate students must make adequate progress toward their degree, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25, and have a faculty submit a recommendation for renewal to the CYSE Department Chair. GTA appointment does not cover student fees. All fees are the responsibility of the student.
